If you are abroad

The notary still has to be a Florida notary.

Living in Bogotá, Mexico City, Madrid, or São Paulo does not change the rule. Florida will only add the foreign-use stamp to a document that a Florida notary completed — or to a document a Florida agency already issued.

What this is

Some documents — powers of attorney, affidavits, a “true and correct copy” statement — have to be notarized before Florida will add the stamp. If you cannot sit in a Florida office, you can meet a Florida notary on a live video call. That is allowed under Florida law. It is not the same as using a local notary in the country where you live.

The rule that trips people up

A Colombian notary, a Mexican notary, a Spanish notary, or a U.S. consulate notary is not a Florida notary. Tallahassee cannot add the Florida stamp to those signatures. If you already signed abroad, you usually have to sign again with a Florida notary on video, then we file the Florida document.

Birth certificates, marriage certificates, and court copies do not use this path. Those come from Florida vital records or a Florida county clerk. Video notary is for documents you create and sign.

How a Florida video session works

  1. You download or finish the document — for a photocopy, use our True and Correct Copy PDF.
  2. You book a Florida-commissioned notary who offers video sessions. Ask them to confirm they are commissioned in Florida, not Georgia, not New York, not “online nationwide.”
  3. You show government photo ID on camera. Some sessions also run a short identity quiz.
  4. You sign on the call. The notary completes the Florida notary block in English, even if the rest of the document is in Spanish.
  5. The notary sends you the signed original or a print-ready file. The original wet-ink or the Florida electronic notary output then ships to us in Tallahassee.
  6. We add the Florida stamp at the state office and ship it to wherever the foreign office asked you to send it.

If you are in Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Spain, or anywhere else

Time zones are the only extra friction. Florida notaries work Eastern Time. Book a morning Florida slot if you are in Europe, or an evening Florida slot if you are in the Andes. Keep the camera, ID, and a printer or tablet ready. After the session, overnight the document to our Tallahassee desk or have the notary ship it for you.

What we will not file

  • A document notarized only in another country.
  • A document notarized in another U.S. state.
  • A photocopy with no Florida notary block.
  • A Cuba packet sold as a Florida stamp — Cuba does not take this stamp.
